You should probably be using the gem command or the bundler package to
install Ruby gems. Don't rely on the debian package manager to install
anything related to Ruby.

Hi,
I used xmpp4r under Lenny without problem, but on my new server under
Debian Squeeze, the package libxmpp4r-ruby is not available.
Do you now why, and is there an alternative for this package ?

Hey all,

I don't know why people say these things. I am using Debian & Ruby for
deployment and development for years. No problems at all.
That said, Debian Ruby packaging has switched to the gem2deb infrastructure.
This means you can run: gem2deb xmpp4r, if you would like to have a
Debian package when there is none (yet).

I know why: the original maintainer had given up maintenance of
upstream and thus also of the packaging. At that point, development had
slowed considerably and he was unsure whether maintenance would
continue, hence he asked for removal of a package, see also:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=609265

I am willing to pick up maintenance of the package and ensure it returns
in Debian Wheezy. However, I'd prefer not to maintain packages with
dead upstream as often occurs with Ruby libs in my experience. I recall
there being some discussion about continuing development, but fail to
find it again in the archives. Any word on that?

Cheers,

Paul
